Mitote Fleece Hoodie
Mitote Fleece Hoodie
Mitote Collection
My whole life, whenever I heard the word "mitote," it was always in the context of “talking shit,” gossip, “trouble maker” or being “messy”—often speaking specifically about femmes and women in my community. “What a mitotera!”
Mitote is a Nahuatl word initially used to describe major significant cultural celebrations. Today, the word is still used in many parts of the American Southwest and Mexico. For me, it can be interpreted as a metaphor for resilience rather than in its reductionary framework as it relates to the suppression or distortion of Indigenous practices and values.
When I think of the word, I feel empowered. I imagine matriarchs leading spaces where we speak openly and freely, to laugh and speak loudly and truthfully—and to share knowledge. Like, yeah, let’s make a mess, it’s already a mess; we have to talk about this. To be a “mitotera,” to have a “mitote,” is my way of disrupting a system that wants us to be silent, suppressed, and tucked away. Like, for what?
This is for the Mitotes out there!
